Dogs + Cats

Animal fantasy are subjects of Jean Metcalf's paintings with her cats taking center stage watching a rodent mariachi band, or fascinated by racoons raiding the refrigerator.  Her quirky vision resonates with those who see their pets as children with fur living in a parallel universe with dogs and cat relations with other pets and critters.   Aarne Anton, Curator

Dogs + Cats,  American Primitive, 594 Broadway, April 23-June 12, 2004  This lively exhibition includes more than 60 feline or canine representations in two or three dimensions.  Some are by self-taught artists.  A big colorful painting by Jean Metcalf has cats and dogs in it but features a formal parade of rats carrying wounded birds on stretchers.  (Johnson)
